Established in 2004, A3D, Inc. (African Development through Drum and Dance) is a non-profit organization based in Salem, Massachusetts. The mission of A3D is to develop and uphold the economic, environmental, educational, and public needs of underprovided persons both domestically and abroad. The organization specifically reaches out to West Africa, the inspiration of their cause.
Led by their President, Mamadou Diop, a world-renowned musician, A3D started as an idea developed in January of 2004 by a group of twelve Massachusetts residents who traveled to Senegal, West Africa. Their experience in Senegal was both a cultural discovery and an awakening experience. The group was particularly impressed by the ability of the Senegalese people to live with limited resources. Upon returning to the United States, the group decided to initiate a non-profit organization dedicated to West African schools, hospitals, and children. Their first fundraising efforts provided much-needed computers and sewing machines to two schools.
The A3D directors and members also see a need for providing music, art, and cultural knowledge to their local community. A3D is the organizer and sponsor of the Salem CultureFest and is planning on the development of a multicultural center, in addition to their continuing efforts to provide medical and other materials to hospitals and schools in West Africa. A3D's accomplishments to date have made the organization an established recognized part of their community, along with having a recognized humanitarian presence both in Africa and in the Greater Boston area.
